How does it work?
Simple, Flexible, and Reliable
At Gearshop Hire, we make renting outdoor gear easy and stress-free — so you can focus on the adventure ahead.
✔️ Book your gear online for the dates you need — and that’s all you pay for! Whether it's a weekend escape or a week-long mission, you only pay for your actual hire dates, not for any time the gear spends in transit.
✔️ Pay securely when you book, including a fully refundable $50 security bond*. This bond is simply there to help us keep our gear in top condition for you and the next adventurer. Once your gear is returned in good shape, we’ll refund your bond straight away — no stress.
*$100 security bond for Personal Locator Beacon.
Two Easy Options for Pickup or Delivery
1. Pick up and drop off in-store (Nelson):
If you're local or passing through, you’re welcome to collect and return your gear directly from our Nelson store — and meet our friendly team of outdoor specialists while you’re at it!
2. Nationwide courier delivery and return:
No matter where you are in New Zealand, we’ll courier your gear out to you ahead of time, so you have everything before your hire period starts. Please note that when using the courier option, there is a minimum of 3 days from ordering to the start of your hire to allow for processing and delivery.
When you’re done, just pack it back up using the pre-paid return courier ticket we provide, and call the courier for an easy pickup — simple as that!
✔️ You only pay for the days you’re using the gear — not for any days it's in transit.

Couldn't load pickup availability
¹ Make sure your rental fits the opening dates and hours of your chosen store. We charge by the night, with discounts for longer rentals. Your gear will be ready for you to pick up from 3pm on your selected pickup date.
² Whenever you can, aim to bring your rental back to the same store you picked it up from during their opening hours on your selected Return Date. If needed, we’re happy to accept returns until 10am the next morning, as long as the store is open then. If you need to return your rental to a different store, please let us know ahead of time so we can arrange to relocate the gear and get it ready for the next customer. Late fees will apply if not returned on time.
You can still book gear for hire over public holidays — but please note, our stores are closed on those days. Please contact us in advance to arrange collection on an earlier day. If your booking falls near a holiday or weekend, or you're unsure about timing, please get in touch. We’re happy to help make sure everything's ready when you need it — no surprises.
- Out of hours? If pick up or drop off is required outside of shop hours then do contact us asap and we’ll see what we can do.
- Fully booked? If the item you need isn't available - please contact us on hire@gearshop.co.nz in case we're able to bring in more gear from our warehouse.
