Our Story

Beginnings
Gearshop began as Altitude Outdoor, a brick-and-mortar store in Nelson, New Zealand, founded by Hamish Pirie in 2006. Recognizing the growing potential of online retail, Hamish transitioned the business entirely to e-commerce in 2013, rebranding it as Gearshop. This strategic shift allowed Gearshop to offer a wider range of high-quality outdoor equipment to customers nationwide. The company's dedication to exceptional service and expertise has been recognized with the New Zealand Online Retailer of the Year award in both 2017 and 2019. Today, Gearshop continues to support New Zealand's outdoor community by providing reliable gear and knowledgeable advice for adventurers of all levels.

Community
Gearshop proudly supports New Zealand’s outdoor and sporting community through sponsorship of local events and athletes who share our passion for adventure. From trail running and climbing competitions to grassroots initiatives, we’re committed to empowering Kiwis to push their limits and explore the great outdoors. By backing sportspeople and events, we aim to inspire the next generation of adventurers and celebrate the spirit of exploration that defines our brand.

Present day
Gearshop serves New Zealand’s outdoor enthusiasts through our online store and two physical locations: 53c Bolt Road, Tahunanui, and 213 Queen Street, Richmond. Both stores offer expert advice and quality gear for purchase.
Our rental products can be collected from our flagship store in Bolt Road - or shipped across NZ for your convenience (excluding Chatham Islands).
For added convenience, gear rentals may be returned out of hours by prior arrangement through either the Richmond store, or NZ Rent a Car at Nelson Airport, to help visitors gear up for the whole experience.
